  • Conversational follow-ups: Expanding AI Overview that allows users to ask follow-up questions without leaving the SERP.

The pattern is clear: simple informational queries have been devastated. But transactional and navigational queries? The impact is minimal.

Here’s the nuance most analyses miss: being cited in an AI Overview partially offsets the CTR loss. Pages that appear as citations see CTR drops of only 8-15%, while pages not cited but still ranking in positions 1-3 see drops of 30-50%. Getting cited is the new “ranking #1” for informational queries.

4. Cover topics comprehensively but in segments. A detailed section on one aspect is more likely to earn a citation than a shallow overview of the entire topic.

5. Include original data or unique perspectives. This is the strongest signal I’ve observed. Pages with proprietary data or original research are cited at dramatically higher rates.

Optimizing Content Structure for AI Citations

Use descriptive H2 and H3 headings that match question patterns. A heading like “How Long Does Product Schema Take to Appear in Results” is more citable than “Timeline Considerations.”

Place key answers immediately after the heading. State your answer in the first sentence, then provide supporting detail. The AI consistently pulls from the first 1-2 sentences following a heading that matches query intent.

Use structured formats where appropriate. Numbered lists, comparison tables, and definition-style formatting all get cited at higher rates than prose.

  2. Shift content investment toward AI-resistant formats. Reduce basic informational content, increase original research, tools, and interactive content.
  3. Optimize for citations, not just rankings. Structure content to be extractable with clear headings and direct statements.
  4. Diversify traffic sources. Email lists, social media, and direct traffic hedge against further AI Overview expansion.
  5. Invest in brand building. Navigational queries are the safest organic traffic with compounding returns.
  6. Monitor and adapt continuously. Google iterates on AI Overviews rapidly. Static strategies will break.

The SEO landscape is genuinely different than it was two years ago. But “different” is not “dead.” The practitioners who study the data, adapt their strategies, and focus on creating content that genuinely serves users will continue to drive results. Understand what Google is rewarding, and align your strategy accordingly.
